Why Is Exercise Good For You?
May 5, 2008
We know we should exercise for at least 30 minutes a day 5 times a week. But why exactly is exercise good for you? Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of getting that workout in each day.
Obviously there are the physical benefits of exercise including weight loss, improved stamina, increased lifespan, and better overall health. But did you know that regular exercise can also improve mental health? Not only does exercise improve your body, it makes you feel better too. Let’s take a look at a few of the ways regular exercise makes you feel better - and that of course is why exercise is good for you.
Exercise Boosts Your Energy
It’s easy to feel tired and sluggish with our usual modern lifestyle of being stuck in front of a desk all day. Getting some regular exercise and moving your muscles, makes you feel more energized and ready to face the day. Regular exercise will also help you sleep better. This will leave you feeling rested when you wake up in the morning. By working out you will also build up the muscle strength you need for regular every day activities.
Exercise Relives Stress
Many people know the endorphins from exercise make you feel better and have a better outlook on life, but exercise can also provide a time for reflection; further easing a stressful life. We often don’t get much time to ourselves to just think. Some types of exercise, such as running, gives you the time to think about the day and sort out problems.
Exercise Improves Self Esteem
Getting through a workout gives you a feeling of accomplishment. This in turn gives you a feeling of self-worth and boosts your self esteem. In return, feeling like you can accomplish things makes you more likely to work out again. This quickly develops into a pattern or cycle that will have you working out regularly. Just get started and see for yourself.
Exercise Increases Social Interaction
Being social and having friends is an important part of our lives. We are social beings and need social interaction to be happy. Stay in touch with old friends or make new ones at the gym by working out together. Running on a treadmill becomes much more enjoyable when you have someone to talk to on the treadmill next to you.
Regular exercise can have a big impact on your emotions and how well you feel. Many doctors and therapists recommend exercise as part of their treatment for both anxiety and depression. If exercise is powerful enough to combat depression, think what it can do to improve your life.
