Pilates, it is possibly one of the most effective and exciting fitness trends in most recent years. Here are four tips that will help make your transition into a Pilates routine as easy as possible. Be sure to always check with your doctor before starting this or any workout regime.

1. Pilates in a group is fun, start with this. Of course your other option is to start learning on your own, but it’s easier and fun to start out this exercise, which can sometimes be a challenge if you get into a class with the group support. Your local fitness center should have classes, check out what they offer. Other options to check out are local rec centers or community college. Your best bet if you can find one is to go to a Pilates studio in your area. Wherever you choose to go, make sure the Pilates instructor has received adequate training and is certified by a well known health, fitness or Pilates organization. Don’t be afraid to ask, it’s your body and your right to know. Another place that sometimes offers Pilates to the general public are local rehabilitation centers. If you sometimes have a problem. The camaraderie of group practice can deepen your experience and make your Pilates practice fun.

2. If you can’t find any classes that are local or just don’t want to do one there, your other option is to purchase a Pilates video. An internet search will find you plenty of places to purchase this from. You will have dozens of workouts to choose from, and most of them are great quality. If you do choose to do a home workout instead of a gym or studio, consider signing up for maybe one or two classes. Having this kind of help from an instructor will help you get a solid background in Pilates, and how to do the movements for maximum effectiveness and safety. This kind of help will be beyond price in your new routine.

3. It’s important to dress for comfort and use the right accessories. If you wear clothing that is too tight or not comfortable it can cause an injury. If you’ve ever been to Yoga, dress the same way, with loose fitting tops and bottoms that are sleek but not too tight. Most Pilates are practiced without shoes. You’ll need to buy a mat to keep your body cushioned and supported throughout the routine. Don’t use any of the more advanced accessories until you are more experienced, that will come in time.

4. Be careful so that you don’t injure yourself. If there is a certain movement that you are unsure of, don’t do it without proper supervision from an instructor. Never push yourself and attempt to do movements that are beyond your limits. Pilates should not cause you to feel any pain. If you have sustained injuries in the past or currently have back pain you will want to be careful not to cause any further injuries. If this is the case consider doing Pilates at a therapy center. Pilates is currently being offered at many wellness centers and rehabilitating clinics. Take advantage of these resources. Pilates can be greatly beneficial to those who suffer from chronic back or neck pain, and some forms of arthritis. Discuss your condition with your doctor and check to see if you can incorporate your Pilates practice into any other physical therapy that you may be receiving.
