If you still haven’t found the perfect workout for you yet, consider Pilates. It is a very gentle workout that won’t leave you huffing and puffing, but at the same time it’s great at strengthening your core and giving you that lean and toned look.

Pilates Workouts – The Basics

Exercise is important for a number of reasons. It provides cardiovascular health which keeps the body looking and feeling younger. Exercise helps improve immunity and keep disease at bay. Pilates’ workouts are a part of that exercise equation.

What is Pilates? Many people think that it is just a dainty workout for people who are already in shape. These people believe it involves stretching, bending and eating celery to maintain the body, but don’t believe it has anything to do with fitness. For those who think along those lines, you might actually be surprised by the truth behind Pilates.

Pilates is a workout developed by Joseph Pilates that uses the idea of contrology. It balances the body through a series of controlled movements designed to stretch and build muscles in the body.

Anyone can do Pilates. The moves sound intimidating like the downward facing dog, but it isn’t sinister skinny people speak I promise. Your body might need a bit of time to adjust to the positions in the beginning, but that’s usually the case with any exercise routine. Those who have taken up the Pilates workout have come to love it and swear by its results.

The way Pilates was developed involved using a series of ropes and pulleys. More modern Pilates styles like the Windsor Pilates workout program don’t use such a contraption, but a mat and other small pieces of equipment to bring the amazing results some people have experienced.

The main target of Pilates is the core. Our core is the center of our body. It supports the rest of our body and resists injuries that are a result of poor muscle development in the core which includes the abdominals and the back muscles.

Pilates’ workouts keep the core muscles in mind through every movement and routine. As you work, you’ll see your stomach become shapely and defined. You can even get a six pack if you want it from the help of a workout like this. Building muscle through Pilates burns fat when combined with a decent eating plan.

Pilates has six principles that are built into the workout routines: breath, concentration, control, centering, flow, and precision. The entire body is connected and by working all of the muscle groups, the body becomes a lean machine that can handle anything.

Pilates’ classes can be taken at a gym, a private studio, or through a DVD series of workouts if you exercise at home or are limited on time. With Pilates, you won’t be running around or lifting heavy weights, but your body will get a deep workout that will change its shape. Pilates works well for people who can’t handle vigorous exercise.

Did you know that there is a connection between muscle building and weight loss? Don’t worry, you don’t have to build up big body building style muscles. This is more about toning your body and how it can help you lose more weight every single day.

Core muscle exercises and strengthening your core are all the rage in the fitness world right now and you may be tempted to dismiss these exercise regimens as simply the latest fad, but you should take a minute to find out exactly what your “core” is and how important it is to overall fitness.

The “core” of your body is a set of 29 muscles that surround your torso; specifically they include your abs, gluts, and back muscles. These muscles are very important because they surround your body’s center of gravity. Having a building up the core muscles improves posture, balance, and stability. Put your hand on someone’s abdominal or back muscles while they move (always get permission first), to feel first hand how important the core muscles are in almost every move we make. You should be able to feel these muscles working no matter what part of the body is moving.

Since it’s a bit tedious to do 29 separate exercises (one for each muscle), you can do core muscle exercises that target a group of core muscles at the same time. The best exercises for strengthening these muscles groups are the crunch, the bridge, the plank, and the quadruped. These exercises should be done slowly, focusing on doing them right and remaining control through the entire process. Remember that an exercise done right once is more helpful than doing it wrong twice.

For those of us that don’t have a lot of time on our hands, there are ways to work your core while you exercise the rest of your body. The best way to do this is by using an exercise ball. Doing exercise on a ball requires a lot of effort to stay balanced. Since the core is pivotal for staying balanced, you’ll work these muscles while you’re doing exercises for other parts of the body. These balls can be purchased at most stores that sell fitness equipment.

While you’re purchasing a ball, you should pick up an instructional tape or even sign up for a class to get you started. The most important part of doing these exercises is doing them correctly. You should focus on the form of the movements and proper posture. This will give you the most benefit from your workout.

Hopefully this information is enough to get you started. While it’s important to exercise all your muscles, paying extra attention to your core will allow you to work perform better with your whole body.

A exercise ball is a great tool for pilates. Learn more about pilates, yoga and ball exercise.

Mat workouts account for much of the work done in a pilates routine. It’s the best way for a beginner to get involved into the program, and at the same time, it’s one of the hardest parts of the exercise to fully develop. These exercises are useful in helping the body to become strengthened and realigned, with increases in posture and balance occurring rapidly. In this article, we’ll give you a basic outline of some of the parts of the mat exercise program with regards to pilates.

In the original pilates program organized by Joseph Pilates years ago, there are 44 different mat exercises. The exercises center around six basic principles which are the foundation for the program. The principles are: centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement. Based off of earlier exercises incorporated into yoga thousands of years ago, mat exercises are performed while sitting or in a reclined position. These exercises form much of the basis of a pilates routine. While some trumpet the merits of pilates equipment and neglect the basic mat work, it’s important to perform and it’s a part of pilates that you can perform anywhere, regardless of conditions. Most beginners are recommended to attend a class in order to get a very basic understanding of how to properly perform the exercises. Below are a few basic mat workout exercises which can help you to begin pilates.

First is supine breathing. Supine is a term that refers to laying on your back with your face facing upwards. You should lie on your back with your knees bent at about a 45 degree angle. Place one of your hands on the lower part of your stomach, and inhale deeply through the nose. Feel the way your hand moves when you take in the breath. Next, exhale, and try to focus on the movement of pulling your belly button as close to your spine as you can. Take these breaths between four and six times; this will help you to relieve stress and relax before engaging in other pilates exercises.

Next comes the cat stretch; for this exercise, you’re going to need to be on your hands and knees, with your knees directly underneath your hips and your hands underneath your shoulders. Lay your hands out flat and contract your abs, causing your spine to be more properly aligned. As you inhale, pull your head upwards until you are looking in front of you. When it comes time to exhale, tuck your chin and do your best to pull your belly inwards and towards your spine. Repeat this four to six times.

These are just a few of the breathing exercises that surmise a pilates routine. They are some of the first things to learn when beginning a pilates program, and consequently can be very important to your success. Now that you know a few of the basics of mat work, you can better understand exactly what makes up the pilates exercises. There are many different positions and exercises to learn, and with some dedication, you can find yourself a self-fashioned expert.

Pilates are a great way to strengthen your core, which is exactly why it helps with back pain. Learn more about pilates for middle back pain.

When many people think of pilates, they think of pop princesses like Madonna learning to become more flexible while aiding the strength of their muscles to a certain degree. However, few realize that the exercise program has a high amount of potential when it comes to helping those with a back problem to rehabilitate.

One of the main reasons that the regular use of a pilates program can be of major benefit to those with a back problem is the fact that the program focuses largely around the idea of increasing the strength of the core muscles. These muscles, which Joseph Pilates, the creator of pilates, referred to as ‘the powerhouse’, consist of the muscles that are in and around the area of the abdomen, the back, and the groin. Through using gentle exercise techniques to slowly build the strength and the stability of these muscles, those who have a back problem can be greatly aided. Since the spine rests at the center of Joseph’s ‘powerhouse’, using the program adds protection and flexibility to the spine. When the muscles of the abdomen and the back are strong, it provides a perfect opportunity for proper spinal development and healing. Also, through regular, proper use of the exercise, one can expect to experience an increase in posture that can be truly beneficial to aiding back pain. Those who undergo a pilates program often experience a better sense of body awareness after participating, and that can also aid to a person’s ability to bounce back from a back problem.

There are two types of exercises that are employed in the pilates program: they are exercises that are performed on a mat and exercises that are performed through the use of specialized pilates equipment. Mat work is the most commonly performed type of pilates, and it incorporates the use of a mat to aid the comfort of the workout. These exercises generally focus on a strengthening of the trunk and the hip, with added spine flexibility occurring as a side-effect of performing the exercises. The use of pilates equipment is also beneficial to those who have a back problem, and one can usually find a class locally that allows for use of pilates equipment without having to purchase it all on your own (it’s EXPENSIVE!).

When it comes to treating back pain, one of the most important things that you can do is to speak to a doctor about your problem. There are some cases of spinal injury that can not be aided by the use of pilates, and it’s important to discuss the issue with your doctor before beginning an exercise regimen. If you’re given the all-clear for using pilates exercise to aid the problem, however, it is of utmost importance that you do in fact undertake the program. It’s one of the best methods available for helping back pain, as it’s a gentle form of exercise that doesn’t require much physical exertion, limiting the possibility of problems arising that may actually cause more harm.

If you have been learning more about pilates, you may be interested in pilates exercise history. Here is a brief introduction into how pilates was invented.

Pilates is an exercise method that has a vast history behind its pop culture explosion as of late. It’s been practiced for almost a century, but it has only recently gained widespread exposure. In this article, we’ll trace the roots of pilates in order to help you to learn about exactly what the basis of the program is.

The story of pilates begins in 1880. This was the year in which Joseph Pilates was born, and as he grew, he came to love exercise more and more. In his adolescent years, he often modeled for fitness charts, showing the degree to which his training encompassed. Ironically, pilates might not have ever seen the light of day had it not been for the first World War.

When the war began, Pilates was in England. This was a problem since he was born and raised in Germany. To that end, he was placed into an internment camp on the Isle of Man. During this period of time, Pilates lusted after developing an exercise routine which could be performed in confined quarters that could help those with the flu to rehabilitate their bodies.

He drew upon his knowledge of ancient exercise practices as well as thinking about his own experiences when it came to kleeping in shape. One of the key pieces of equipment in modern day pilates, known as the Reformer, was created by Joseph and made out of an old hospital bed. His exercise program was seen to be of much merit to his fellow interns, and word soon spread of his ideals.

After the war was over, people were clamoring for Pilates to help them to train, and he did. He gave instruction to many, with professional boxers and police officers regularly requesting his help. In 1926, he took his training regimen to the next level when he moved to New York. He created his own studio, and he based his designs off of not repetition, but of intense form.

Over 500 exercises were used by Joseph, and he stressed the use of both mat work and equipment work in order to fully reach the benefits of the exercise. He created five different pieces of exercise equipment which were to be used in conjunction with his program, and he came to receive quite the regular clientele. He wrote two books on the subject, helping him to detail exactly what he believed were the important points of pilates. After his death in 1967, his wife Clara continued to keep the exercise studio open for 11 years.

Pilates may have not gained wide acceptance while Joseph lived, but it most certainly picked up when the stars and starlets of Hollywood began to attribute their physiques to the regular use of a pilates program. With that, many in the medical profession have come to acknowledge just how good pilates can be for the body. It is used for numerous reasons, including a more complete fitness of the body and a significant method of rehabilitation for those with injured muscles. Not a lot has changed from Joseph’s original program, and many of the tools that he designed are in use today.

Pilates can improve your overall well being as you will find out in this article on pilates health benefits and some of the history of why pilates was invented.

Pilates Improves Overall Well Being

Designed to challenge your strength, flexibility and coordination, Pilates aims to put your body in perfect balance. During WWI, Joseph Pilates served as an orderly at a military camp, working with bed-ridden patients. Many of these patients were not able to move, but that did nothing to deter Pilates’ determination to help them gain strength and mobility. Experimenting with his patients and on his own, Pilates devised a series of controlled exercises that engaged both mind and body. Watching patients carefully, Pilates saw them become more active and alert. The men taking part in Pilates’ exercise regime recovered more effectively than those who did not.

At one point Pilates removed bedsprings from beneath the beds and attached them to the walls at or above bed level. These springs were used to excercise. His contraption later inspired the Reformer, a popular Pilates exercise machine utilizing springs, straps, and a box to perform a variety of exercises.

Those who performed Pilates exercises developed a strong immune system and managed to escape a deadly plague that killed many at the time. Not one of Pilates students died from the influenza epidemic of this time which he claimed was due to the result of his work. None of Pilates’ followers succumbed even though the camps, where many were located were the hardest hit.

Becoming involved in a Pilates program will change the way you think about your body, exercise, and ultimately your total well-being.

A Look at Winsor Pilates

Winsor Pilates has gone all the rage in today’s ever changing market for the best weight Loss programs, and so far, it ha received good reviews both form users and professional analysts. But for someone, who just got introduced to this form of the ever famous exercise regimen, one cannot resist to ask, what is it? How can it help me?

Reviewers say that Winsor Pilates is best for weight loss, fat burning, mental conditioning, and like its namesake, it offers better health through exercise. Winsor Pilates comes in a DVD, and claims when used 3 days a week can produce results in as low as a month. This is a rather big claim considering the weight loss programs available to us today. But according to most users, Winsor Pilates, does work, with extra effects to boot.

Winsor Pilates is a low intensity exercise that burns a lot of calories, because it is low intensity, it can be done by almost anyone in almost any condition. Joseph Pilates, first invented the Pilates method, and focused on breathing and stretching in slow paced movements. Winsor Pilates is a derivation of the Pilates that Joseph Pilates invented, made by Mari Winsor. It aims to train the “core” or the muscles in the abdomen, back and buttocks. It says that by strengthening your core, you get aside from physical fitness, mental clarity which allows the mind to work efficiently with the body.

Mari Winsor, the inventor of Winsor Pilates is 54 years old, with the physique of a 20 year old. Due to the Winsor Pilates System, her body is lean and flexible, which we cannot say for a lot of people her age.

Mari Winsor made Winsor Pilates for the use of the majority. It makes use of the Pilates method, modified into a low intensity exercise which as said earlier can be done by most people, even in the frailest of health stature. This makes it accessible as well as useful for anyone, even people of poor health, thus improving their health without the fancy requirements of other methods.

Some people even say the Winsor Pilates can be used for rehabilitation, although this is true, it is hardly very easy for a person with broken bones to work out only in front of a DVD. If however, someone wants to use it for rehabilitation, it should be under the supervision of a certified Pilates instructor. This is because, for rehabilitation, Pilates has to be precisely observed, no amount of DVD’s can replace an instructor, an instructor assures that you execute the moves correctly, and that you are not damaging or hurting yourself doing it, in addition, they are a good source of answers for most of the questions you’ll have about Pilates. Plus it won’t hurt to consult your doctor either, before using Pilates for rehabilitation.

For pregnant women however, Mari Winsor did not, modify the Pilates method to accommodate the pregnant women, so care must be taken. During the third trimester, Pilates done lying down should be avoided; this could damage the blood flow to the baby.

All in all, aside from pregnant women and extremely ill people, Winsor Pilates is for everyone. It provides an exercise that is easy on the joints muscles and bones. After the increased focus on abdominal muscles and all in one gyms Winsor is a definitely good replacement for methods that don’t work.

Are you curious about pilates? Read these explainations on pilates exercises. It will give you a good introduction to pilates.

An Introduction to Pilates

Pilates is a series of exercises designed to improve flexibility and strength through a variety of stretching and balancing movements. It was developed by Joseph Pilates, a prisoner of war during the Second World War, and has become increasingly popular.

From when he was very young, Pilates took inspiration from the ancient Indian art of yoga, Zen Buddhism, and physical exercises of the Greek and Roman empires and conducted experiments that helped him gain strength.

Pilates introduced his exercises to the inmates of the German internment camp, helping them keep physically fit. He also introduced mat workout and physical exercise equipment made from bed springs.

Today Pilates has become particularly popular among dancers, athletes, celebrities and models, because in addition to helping to develop flexibility without causing a strain on the muscles, it also helps improve posture.

A regular Pilates regimen results in a flatter stomach and a thinner waist and thighs, as well as increasing mobility in joints. Like yoga, it also relieves stress and anxiety.

Chiropractic consultants recommend Pilates for strengthening the back and the spine. Physiotherapists also recommend Pilates, to those seeking rehabilitation after injuries to their limbs.

Pilates is also recommended for the elderly, people suffering from osteoporosis, and people who are overweight.

Pilates has become quite popular among athletes, dancers and actors because the workout improves not just the body but mind as well. Pilates’ balanced approach ensures that no muscle group is overworked and as a result the body works as an efficient, holistic system.

Pilates is for everyone – the young, the old, the sedentary, the athletic, and those who have a physical disability.

Pilates helps improve strength, tone, flexibility and balance, and makes the body less prone to injury. It reduces stress, relieves tension, and boosts energy through deep stretching.

It creates a stronger, more flexible spine, promotes recovery from injury, increases joint motion, improves circulation, heightens neuromuscular coordination, corrects muscle groups, enhances mobility, agility and stamina, and improves the look and feel of your body.

Learn more about the differnce in yoga and pilates as well as what each of them is and isn’t. Yoga and Pilates are both great methods of exercise that are similar in many aspects but also quite different.

Yoga and Pilates are different; learn how they differ and why you may want to choose on over the other. Both exercises are similar in many ways but also have many differences, in fact, yoga isn’t actually classified as just an exercise program. Both are very powerful tools to help you look and feel better but let’s have a look at the differences. Here’s some further look at both in depth.

Yoga – The first

Yoga is much older than Pilates and was first started over 5,000 years ago. It’s more than just an exercise program. It is a lifestyle change that many people may have problems with and need to take seriously in order to accomplish. Yoga is focused as much on the spiritual aspects of healing as it is on the physical aspects of the body. It uses a varied combination of breathing and movements to get the body back into it’s targeted range. Yoga involves an open minded thinking as it encompasses the lifestyle of being ethical, spiritual and physical.

It is important to note that yoga is centered on meditation and that the poses that are done are done to allow for better concentration and better meditation abilities.

Pilates – Something Entirely Different

Pilates is very different from Yoga and it focuses on physical healing and using breathing and movements to accomplish that. The body is taken from one movement on to the next in a fluid change. This helps to improve the body in a way that is very gentle and non-stressful on muscles. Pilates is about control and is Contrology in it’s dance form. It is all about making movements as fluid as possible and providing a natural means for exercise.

Both Pilates and Yoga allow for the person doing them to improve their health all overall well being through controlled breathing. Breathing is a very important part to the success of both programs.

How Do I Know What To Choose?

What better way to figure out which best suits you than to give them both a try? Go ahead and look up classes in your area and sign up for both. Once you are there think about what is more comfortable and feels best with you. Which suits your lifestyle and can be incorporated easily? The choice between yoga and Pilates is something that you need to make on your own.

The Benefits of a Pilates Class

Pilates is a technique of exercising devised by Joseph Pilates, a German National who as a frail child turned to exercise to strengthen his body. When the technique was introduced to America, it became very popular among dancers, who need flexibility without bulking up the muscles. The exercise eventually grew to where almost anyone would like the low intensity of the work out. As far as benefits go, with Pilates they are pretty much endless. It helps to tone your body, and calm your mind, and it is in many ways similar to Yoga. Pilates is very often used as a form of rehabilitation as well as for those who are aging and need more strength.

The activity of Pilates and classes has been around for more than ninety years and it was introduced in the 1910’s. The benefits of Pilates have become more prevalent over time and has gained in popularity. If you’re wondering about the benefits then here are some that will occur as you take your Pilates classes.

Flexibility

There is no doubt that a Pilates class will improve flexibility since the central part of it is stretching. Stretching is such an important part of your day so that you can get your body toned. If we are not very active and moving then our muscles tend to get stiff and this restricts the movement of our muscles. By stretching out your muscles Pilates classes will help to improve your flexibility and helps to prevent injury for people who do work at the gym or use weights.

Posture

You’re posture can be improved by doing Pilates. When most people do exercise they often will focus on one part at a time and this sometimes makes certain muscles stronger than others. If you only focus on having great legs and abs, then other parts of your body will be behind and this can create an imbalance. By taking Pilates classes you can help to restore balance to your body by working on all of your body parts. The core muscle groups, the pelvis abdomen and buttocks, are being exercise more often giving making the body more symmetrical and aligned. Pilates class will help you to have stronger muscles, improve your body shape and also improve your posture. And with stretching exercises, it also makes your muscle elastic.

Stress

Managing your stress is likely one of the biggest concerns of everyone in today’s world. Pilates class can help to improve your mental well being and help you deal with the stresses that life throws at you. It also helps you to focus while doing breathing exercises that are relaxing and put your body at ease.

Mind

Another benefit of taking Pilates classes is the benefit to your mind and overall mental wellness. Breathing properly improves blood supply and flow to the brain. With the improve circulation, toxins that are in the body gets released, giving the brain more, for the lack of a better word, “breathing room” giving you a sounder, more alert mind.

Develops Your Core

The body’s core, is one of the main focuses of a Pilates class, simply because since it is the core muscles of your body, (near the spine and the lower pelvis) it facilitates movement and carries most of parts of the body, a stronger core means as stronger body.

Better Motion

Pilates classes, unlike yoga, improve motion and make it, smoother to move from one position to another. By working many muscle groups at once in a continuous motion, the muscles get used to working together, making the pattern smother, and less strenuous. This smoother movement helps you avoid injuries as well as good posture.
