I was browsing through the exercise equipment section of my local sports store a while back and came across something called a BOSU ball. Since then, it’s become an integral part of my workouts. If you haven’t tried it yet, I encourage you to hop on and work out on one.

It might be one of the strangest pieces of fitness equipment, but you can get a good workout using it. The BOSU ball total body workout offers your body a challenge. Continue to read this article to start learning more about this workout.

The BOSU ball is a balance trainer. It looks like half of an exercise ball in a frame but it is actually quite effective. Have you ever tried to stand on an exercise ball? This is what it’s like to stand on a BOSU and balance.

Exercising on a BOSU ball works the entire lower half of the body as well as the biceps, triceps, chest, and abs. Those areas amount to all the major muscle groups in your body. Begin the experience with a warm up and a stretch. BOSU workouts are harder than they look so take it easy.

Cardiovascular exercises can be done on the BOSU ball. Find your balance in the center of the ball. Then, jump up and down, maintaining your balance each time you land. You can also jump on and off the ball.

Now that your heart rate is up, you can switch to weight work using the ball. Triceps dips can be performed on the ball side while pushups are usually done on the flat side of the BOSU. Holding the sides of the bottom, you have to balance your body in order to perform the exercise. Starting with knees on the ground helps you find your center on the BOSU before performing straight leg pushups.

The lower body is challenged on the BOSU with exercises like lunges and squats. Squats can be done standing on the ball with or without weights. For lunges, you can lunge onto the ball or perform reverse lunges from the ball to the floor. With each exercise, the abs stay tight for posture and to keep you from falling off the ball.

Just like with an exercise ball, abs exercises can be performed on the BOSU. Sitting below the top of the ball, you can perform upper body crunches. Sitting on the top of the ball is better for V sit ups when you bring your knees up into your chest to work the lower abs and while doing your upper body crunches also.

In class or using a DVD, a variety of cardio routines can be implemented with the BOSU trainer. It provides a good workout for the entire body, especially the abs since they work overtime to just to keep you balanced.

You decided to get back in shape and decided on a treadmill as the workout equipment of choice. Now it’s time to find a good one. This does not mean that it has to be new. A used treadmill can be great, especially if you find one that has not been much used.

Many people buy exercise equipment or have it as a gift and then do not use it. You can find a good one by looking for signs of wear and asking the owner how much use it has had. Also check where it has been stored. Sometimes if someone bought a treadmill and then did not get around to using it they may not have taken care to store it in a dry place. Any rust is a bad sign.

The home treadmill is a very easy to use piece of equipment. All you have to do is start it up, get on and walk or run. Most of them have adjustable speeds so you can pick what suits you. It is usually best to start slower and work up.

Many home treadmills will come with advice on your exercise program, or you can look for this information online. Anyone who can walk can use a treadmill although children should be supervised. It is important to warm up before you start, either by starting with a slow walk or by going through a quick series of stretches, focusing especially on the calf and thigh muscles.

Many people like to listen to music while they exercise and you can do this with an MP3 player or by having music playing in the room. Because you are at home, you also have the choice of watching TV while you exercise. Some people like to do this and others find that their exercise is more effective if they are more concentrated on it instead of watching TV programs.

When you are considering different models of treadmill, there are several things to take into account. First, you will want to look at the horsepower of the motor. Cheaper models often have a lower horsepower motor which is likely to wear out faster. If this is your first treadmill you could choose a lower specification and then upgrade later, but if you are already hooked on the benefits of treadmills from a gym membership or owning one previously, you will want a higher grade motor.

Some treadmills come with a program. Some people find this very helpful and others find it restrictive and annoying. So you need to decide whether you want that. Then there are many other options, including the size of the running pad, whether it folds for easy storage, impact absorption, durability, incline, and railing adjustability.

When you have decided on the options that you want in your treadmill, you can start looking for opportunities to buy, either new or used. You may also see reconditioned or re-manufactured treadmills advertised for sale. These can be great too but be a little careful because sometimes they will have had very heavy use in a gym before being sold off to be reconditioned. If you go for a re-manufactured model try to get a guarantee on it. Otherwise, your best home treadmills options are either buying new or getting lucky and picking up a nearly new treadmill for a low price at a garage sale or on eBay.

Elliptical Trainer Benefits

There are so many elliptical trainer benefits to list that some would say it’s the perfect way to exercise. Elliptical exercise trainers meet the overall need of any exercise program. They combine a weight bearing exercise that limits the impact on the body while optimizing the cardiovascular benefits creating a total body workout routine.

One of the best elliptical trainer benefits is the weight bearing exercises that help in maintaining and improving bone density. Elliptical cross trainers burn more calories and make you feel like you have been on a brisk walk with all the benefits of a good jogging session.

The elliptical motion of the machine provides low impact because your feet never leave the footpads. It creates a smooth and continuous movement that eliminates the stress on your joints. This provides a totally impact free cardio workout routine.

The elliptical exercise trainers are programmed with different training settings to help monitor your cardio workout routine and allow you to set one, two or all three of the following: resistance, speed and ramp. The workouts can be very intense or relatively easy depending on the training program you select.

Elliptical cross trainers provide a great workout for your lower body as well as toning and building leg muscles. It’s ideal for losing weight because it burns more calories that a treadmill or exercise bike. If you are overweight it helps you burn calories while you seem to be leisurely gliding along. Grab the moving handles and work the upper body muscles for a total body workout routine.

Elliptical cross trainers are one of the best pieces of exercise equipment to hit the fitness industry in years. They provide a relatively easy and enjoyable form of exercise that you will look forward to coming back to over and over again.

An elliptical machine and trainer has many health benefits from giving you a great cardio workout to being low impact on your hips and knees. Learn more about this great new type of exercise equipment and what to look for if you are considering purchasing one.

Elliptical Trainer – Health Benefits For Hearts And Hips

Having an elliptical trainer as a cardio workout companion, pays handsome health dividends. Improved cardiovascular function, overall conditioning, and healthy weight loss due to a revved up metabolism, are all part and parcel of the benefits of an elliptical trainer package.

Although these machines were primarily developed as a low-impact exercise solution, elliptical trainers have become superb general fitness tools. They offer continuous motion, without the commotion, so to speak!

With the help of the firm footing provided by the elliptical trainer’s footpads or footplates, the user ‘walks’ with a natural, smooth, flowing movement. The result is bone-strengthening, weight-bearing, fat-burning, aerobic exercise, without the jarring that is a major cause of joint injuries.

You will have a riot on your hands if only your hips, glutes, and legs are called to ‘gym’ service. Maintain bodily harmony and peace, by looking at elliptical trainers that sport crosstraining handlebars. This will get your upper body into the game, placating complaining hips and thighs.

By following this strategy, you maximize the calorie-burning benefit you derive from your time on the elliptical trainer. At the same time, you will be strengthening your arms, back, chest, and shoulders.

Elliptical Trainer – A Basic Checklist

Adjustable Resistance: As your body adapts to the cardio workout, and your aerobic capacity increases, you will need an adjustable resistance feature to maintain the effectiveness off the elliptical trainer program. Look for a machine that offers this feature at the push of a button. You don’t want to lose your momentum, while changing gear.

Backing Up Is Beneficial: An elliptical trainer should offer both forward and reverse motion. This prevents repetitive strain injuries, by cajoling different muscles into action. It also adds variety to your exercise routine, maintaining interest.

Concise Consoles: Make sure that you will be able to understand the workings of the elliptical trainer’s console. Functionality and clear programming are vital. Some machines conveniently accommodate more than one user.

Do-It-Yourself: Most elliptical trainers feature a wide variety of pre-set programs – more than enough to test your limits for some time. However, you may want the option to customize programs to allow for your particular needs. Check that this will be possible.

Even Fluency: When testing an elliptical trainer, a clear sign of the quality of the machine, is the fluency of the motion, and a low noise level. Any sign of instability, is a sign to focus on a different model.

Footprint Fit: If space is a problem, an elliptical trainer may be an ideal option, as it usually is quite a compact piece of fitness equipment. Many models come with wheels for no-fuss mobility.

Heart Rate Monitor: Most elliptical trainers feature hand grip sensors on the handlebars. In any cardiovascular exercise program, it is vital to monitor your heart rate, in order to make adjustments to the workout intensity. A heart monitor strap may also be available.

Incline Incentive: A quality elliptical trainer will have as one of its features, an 0% to 10% adjustable incline, allowing you to up the ante as your muscle power increase. For maximum cardiovascular and strength-building benefits, it is important to retain an element of challenge in your routine.

Jolts And Jars: When testing an elliptical trainer, look for a completely smooth movement, without any jolts or bouncyness in the footpads.

Knee-Demands: An elliptical trainer often is a suitable option to consider, if you are experiencing any knee problems. The natural movement promotes proper alignment of ankle, knee, and hip. However, it is always safe to check with a health practitioner, if you have any medical concerns.

Length Of Stride: Test the elliptical trainer to make sure that it is completely comfortable. Don’t let the machine cramp your style!

All the prominent manufacturers have designed state-of-the-art, feature-rich crosstrainers. The only way to make sure that you find the perfect partner for your cardio workout, is to thoroughly test a wide range of elliptical trainers.

Learn more about exercises using exercise ball and how to make these workouts more effective. The exercise ball is a great tool for a home workout.

Are You Getting the Most from Your Exercise Ball?

Who would have thought a large bouncy ball would have become such a must-have piece of fitness equipment. The genius that designed it, an Italian toy-maker, could not have imagined just how popular it would become. The exercise ball has become part of the furniture at gyms, clinics and increasingly so at home. But are we missing a trick here?

The ball is generally used to develop the core muscles with routines to place them under stress. However, in my opinion, the ball’s best features are not used to the full. Invariably routines using the ball are just the sort of exercises that have been done without a ball for centuries. Sit-ups, leg raises or extensor exercises are nothing new. The positions you can do them in using a ball does add a new dimension, but in effect they are the same. This is not to say an exercise ball routine is not beneficial, with a bit of imagination you can get far more from your ball workout.

The main benefit of the exercise ball is its mobility and compressibility. I believe the ball can be used to develop far more than just core muscles. Just balancing on the ball will help to develop coordination and balance but there is another less obvious skill that you can practice, and that is, learning to be in the moment.

Elite athletes call this Being in The Zone when they experience an effortless, enjoyable state even when setting world records! How can using the simple exercise ball develop this skill? It will help you to ‘get out of the way’ and develop your skills of awareness, focus and detachment – essential for health and fitness. To successfully balance on the ball with no feet on the ground you have to not worry about falling off. This will prevent you from stiffening your jaw, neck and shoulder muscles (common habits in most adults) to allow your in-built balance systems to coordinate your arms, legs and your core at the same time. I call it Total Body Integration. It’s simple really.

The essential objective is to take what you can learn using your ball into your everyday activities. This way you will still be benefiting from your routines when going about your business. You don’t need to think about holding your stomach in, or standing and sitting up straight, because these actions will only cause discomfort and adversely affect your posture in the long term.

So use you imagination. Don’t worry about stomach exercises. Try things that will develop total coordination and your understanding of how your body would like to coordinate itself. Use your body as a whole and not only will your stomach muscles get a workout but your coordination, posture and focus skills will improve dramatically.

Learn more about some of the top rated home exercise equipment that you may want to consider getting for a fun and effective home workout.

Home Exercise Workout Equipment

Life is busy. Between jobs, housework, family, and errands, the days fly by. Add into that the task of spending time going to the gym, and it just doesn’t seem possible for a lot of us. Home exercise equipment and exercise videos are often a great alternative to spending time and money at a gym. If you are planning to start a home exercise routine, you may be wondering what type of exercise equipment you will need to get an effective workout. Often, you will find that you can get the best deals on home exercise equipment online.

First you will need to determine what is your current level of fitness and what goals you wish to accomplish. Your budget and the types of activities you enjoy are major factors as well. If you do not enjoy the exercises you are performing it is very easy to lose interest and quit. The safety of the exercise equipment and the amount of space you have in which to store and use the equipment is also a major concern.

Some of the different types of home exercise equipment are treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationery bicycles, cross-country ski machines, and free weights.

* Treadmills are very popular for use in the home. You can purchase a treadmill in any price range and with basic to advanced functions. You will need a treadmill with solid construction, smooth walking action, a wide belt, incline setting, and a safety cut-off. Make sure you understand the warranty and availability of replacements parts before making your purchase.

* An elliptical trainer gives you a comfortable, non-impact way to exercise and almost anyone can do it. You will be able to adjust the intensity and resistance to fit your current fitness level and change the settings as you progress in your exercise routine. Elliptical trainers vary in price and you should check out several models before making a purchase to make sure you find the best deal that you can possibly find on a well-constructed machine that carries an excellent warranty.

* Stationary bikes give you a no-impact, comfortable way to exercise and will take up very little space. Exercise bikes are great for those who have been leading a sedentary lifestyle and are just beginning an exercise program.

* You may also want to consider a step machine. Steppers give you a great cardio-vascular workout and will help strengthen your lower body muscles.

* Cross-country ski machines and rowing machines are a great way to exercise at home. You can get a full body workout in the comfort of your own home, but be sure to try these machines before you purchase. The workout you receive with a cross-country or rowing machine can be intense and may not be suited for beginners.

* Free-weights and other resistance equipment are great for toning muscles and improving strength and require very little space.

Before you make any purchases determine which kinds of equipment will be the best for you and what your particular goals are in starting a home workout routine. Compare prices, warranties, and consumer reviews for the exercise equipment you are considering purchasing to make sure it fits your needs, your budget, and is safe for you to use.

Most types of exercise equipment that you can use in your home will work great if you use it on a regular basis. Decide what your goals are and what your budget will allow before you begin shopping for new exercise equipment and purchase the types that you will find fun and challenging to use.

For a Good Workout, Try the Medicine Ball

When most people think of a medicine ball, they usually get a mental picture of the old, tattered and torn brown leather weighted ball sitting in the corner of an old school iron pumping gym. They also see these balls as being a very outdated method of working out. When was the last time you’ve seen anyone use one of those or even heard anyone talk about them? With all the modern exercise machines and other various equipment available today, what possible reason could there be to make anyone want to include the medicine ball as part of their workout?

First of all, the medicine ball has come a long way from the old leather ones mentioned earlier. They now come in a vast array of colors and are made with rubber surfaces making them easier to grip. They also come in weights ranging from one to fifty pounds so you can vary resistance to suit your needs. Because they bounce and can be tossed around, they are great for working you with random movements instead of the fixed ones that come with barbell, dumbbell and machine workouts. There is virtually no other equipment in the gym or at home that can provide the versatility of the medicine ball.

Some good reasons to make the medicine ball part of your workout routine are:

You can add variety to your routine because of the limitless kinds of exercises you can do with them. You can toss them, bounce them, roll them, and do many traditional free weight exercises with them. With all the variety they provide, it is hard to get bored with their use and people of all fitness levels from beginner to athlete can use them.

Using the medicine ball is a good tool for meeting people because there are loads of exercises you can do with the ball that work great with two or more people. You can toss the ball to each other, roll it to each other, bounce it back and forth, and hand it off to each other. You can even work in small groups using the ball, making room to be even more creative with it.

A lot of medicine ball exercises are great for working your core or midsection muscles, which are involved when you toss, roll, bounce or catch it. There is also a lot of movement involved when using the ball like side to side movement or front to back movement to catch it. Standing and twisting side to side while holding the ball is great for your midsection as well.

If you are looking to improve your performance in a particular sport or activity, the medicine ball can help there too. Tossing and bouncing it back and forth with a partner helps improve eye-hand coordination. Tossing the ball also improves strength for things like golf and tennis swings, throwing a baseball or football, and swimming strokes. Rolling it will help improve strength for your bowling game or underhand softball pitching.

Using the medicine ball is a great way to add a little something different to your usual exercise routine. You can do things with it that you most likely could not do with the traditional equipment you’ve been using, and at times, using the medicine ball can be downright playful and fun to work with, reminding you of when you were a kid tossing and rolling the ball around in the park with your friends thus making you feel young again.

Three Benefits of Exercising on a Mini Trampoline or Rebounder

1. The jumping up and down motion involved in exercising on a rebounder is the best way to stimulate your lymphatic (immune) system. Your body’s lymph system consists of tubes containing lymphatic fluid. The tubes have one-way valves built into them. Each bounce opens and closes these valves, causing the lymphatic fluid to be pumped and circulated properly. Exercising on a mini trampoline is by far the best way to improve the lymphatic system. It is highly recommended for cancer patients and anyone with a suppressed immune system.

2. Exercising on a rebounder strengthens every cell in your body, not just a few of them. At the top of each bounce, your body experiences a brief moment of weightlessness. At the bottom of each bounce, your body experiences two to four times the normal gravitational pull. The forces of acceleration and deceleration stress every cell, which causes them to strengthen. Therefore, your skin, organs and muscles you are not even aware of are being strengthened by the bouncing action of exercising on a mini trampoline.

3. Bouncing on a rebounder will also make your bones stronger. Astronauts that were in a state of weightlessness for several weeks at a time, lost both muscle strength and bone density. Without the pull of gravity, muscles wither and atrophy and bones become weaker and less dense. NASA found that by exercising on mini trampolines upon returning to earth, the astronauts could safely and quickly rebuild the muscle strength and bone density they had lost. Being inactive or sedentary by sitting or laying most of the day will have the same effect on our bodies that weightlessness does. Rebounding is highly recommended for osteoporosis.

If you are considering buying a treadmill, bowflex may not be the first name that comes to mind, but as one of the biggest names in home gym equipment, it is definitely worth taking a look at this companies treadmills.

Bowflex is a subsidiary of Nautilus Fitness who have been in the exercise equipment business since 1986. Nautilus also owns Schwinn, Stairmaster and Trimline and they’re the second largest producer of exercise equipment in the world.

Bowflex is perhaps better known for their range of home gyms, however they have also come out with several treadmills that add competition to the already crowded mid-priced treadmill market.

Starting around $1100 up to $1999 (MSRP), Bowflex offers 3 treadmill models: the 3 series, 5 series and 7 series treadmill.

Are Bowflex treadmills a good value? Here is a review of the pros and cons of Bowflex treadmills to help you decide for yourself.

Pros:

Bowflex treadmills are sleek, attractive machines. They fold up to save space and have Softdrop decline which makes unfolding your treadmill easier. Built-in wheels also helps you to move your treadmill around if space is tight.

Motor power ranges from 1.75 HP to 3.0 which is fairly average in this price range. All treadmills offer built in workout programs and heart rate monitoring so you can stay in your target heart rate zone while exercising.

Bowflex treadmills offer Strike Zone™ deck suspension cushioning to make your workouts a little more comfortable and the higher end treadmills also come with 3 speed built-in fans to keep you cool.

The best part about Bowflex treadmills are probably their warranties which cover the frame for 15 years, motor for 10 years, parts/electronics for 2 years and labor for 1 year. Although there are similar treadmills with longer warranties, this is still an excellent warranty that will give you peace of mind just in case something goes wrong with your machine.

How do users rate them? Amazon users give 4.5 stars to the Bowflex Series 3 treadmill (not bad considering it’s an economy treadmill) and 5 out of 5 stars to the Bowflex series 7 treadmill.

The most popular treadmill features with buyers are the solid feel, professional look and ease of construction. (However it is only fair to point out that there are still very few user reviews.)

Consumer Reports also rated the Bowflex Series 7 treadmill a ‘Best Buy’ in their February 2006 ratings, giving it an “Excellent” rating in Quality, Exercise Range, and Ergonomics.

Cons:

Treadmill experts have reported noise problems with some of the treadmills due to the plastic parts. This can cause an extremely annoying rattling sound when using your treadmill.

Also, at this price range, competition is fierce and there are several other brands that may offer you more for your money, especially in the area of warranties, consoles and cushioning.

Conclusion:

Bowflex treadmills are getting very positive reviews and they do offer some great warranties. If you really love the Bowflex name, you’ll no doubt be happy with a Bowflex treadmill. However at this price range there is a lot of competition and you might want to shop around a bit before making your final decision.
